Disarming Yourself

I was visiting a friend the other day, we shall call him Nigel,   and he showed me some of his firearms.  All of which were absolutely useless in an oh-crap-there-is-a-guy-breaking in kind of situation.  Maybe he had a hold out piece that he did not show me. At least I hope he did.  He does not live in a crime free neighborhood, nor for that matter does anyone, if they think they do, they are delusional.  I implored him to get a case that is locked but quick to open.  He has young relatives living at home, so a pistol left unlocked on or even in a nightstand would be irresponsible.  I always carry a soapbox around in my back pocket and considering the situation, i.e. recent break-ins in his back yard,  I unfolded the soapbox and climbed up on it.  "Nigel" says I, "You are effectively disarmed.  How, you may ask, if it takes you longer to get gun in your hand ready to defend your family than it does for a bad guy to break in and find you, then your gun collection is as useless as nipples on a tree."  

Owning a gun does not make you ready for home defense. Nigel shoots often, and id good with his firearms. He is a Responsible owner.  But God forbid he suffers a home invasion like his neighbors.  He could be slaughtered and his gun location would wind up in evil hands. All because it takes at least 3 minutes fr him to unlock, load the mags and lock and load.  

We raise cane when the government requires us to lock them up unloaded.(San Fran etc)  Maybe Nigel can find a solution, before it is too late.

Diamondback 9

Great news. I have just laid eyes on a new and exciting ccw pistol. Diamondback Arms DB9 11oz .80 wide. I have carried a DB 380 for about 8 months. I must say the 9 mm will be replacing the 380. Good news also is the laser that I bought from Crimson Trace for my Diamondback 380 will fit right on the Diamondback DB9 the Pocket Protector in 9mm will make a Police officer or legal CCW carrier of 9mm an exccellent option that will utilize the same ammunition. I have ordered a pistol for testing, but if this firearm works as good as my Diamondback DB380 has I will be recommending an even more concealable 9mm than I have previously encountered. The ergonomics of the DB380 are the best of class in that the small pistols that shoot 380. I am making an educated guess that the size of the DB9 will be making its presence known with a little more umph, but I will be able to judge better after a trip to the range. Looking forward to the most concealable 9mm i have ever encountered. And I forgot.... The one I saw has night sights.

New and Exciting at SHOT

At SHOT Show and am excited about several new products. My favorite AR Company CMMG, has a new Accessory, As of yet un-named for Quick detach attach of barrel assembly from The AR. It removes both the gas tube and barrel with a throw lever. a very positive locking lu. This coud be extremely useful for special applications. I am thinking also of the urban dweller that finds nosy neighbors as he heads out to the range. If you do not advertise what is in your house when you are out, nosy neighbors are less likely to break in and steal what you have.

The Preparation Factor

Be Prepared. It is a good motto, and a great way to live.  I understand the need/want to purchase Ammunition that can be stored away for some rainy day.  I applaud those that think ahead.  This applies to handloaders that keep primers on hand and were not scrambling to come up with primers to shoot IDPA or IPSC when the 2009 Tsunami of unavailability hit the shores following the Storm of November.  I get it.   There is one place that I notice few if any shooters think about.  The one of, "If i have 5000 rounds for the firearm,  do i need any extra parts to make sure that the firearm will function enough to use them all?" 

Great question.  If you have not asked it of yourself, now is a great time.  Another great question to research before buying a firearm is, "Are replacement springs and other expendable parts like extractors, ejectors etc. available so I may "Be Prepared?"  If so buy some extra parts. I have at least 3 of every expendable part for my Glock.  Will they go bad? probably not.  But if they do, I know how to replace them and where to get them without wading through paperwork and waiting for them to come in the mail. 

If a firearms company offers a lifetime warranty, that is good. What is even better is a great warranty and the ability to purchase what is needed in case the firearm manufacturer goes out of business or is forced to not sell parts.  (After all we know why we buy the ammo, Same reason we should buy the parts) A firearms company that does not trust the end user enough to sell them spare parts should not be trusted to sell me a firearm.  So we are not all gunsmiths, that should not preclude us from having the parts on hand to take to someone with more skills in the fine art of fixing the broken lifesaver.

I prefer to spend my money on firearms that have parts availability.  I do not like expensive firearm shaped paperweights.

Gun Range Dues

It is that time of year again,  when we have to begin thinking about the payout for a year of dues. Gun Clubs want to be paid for what they provide.   Dues can run the gamut between $50.00 and $250.00 per year.  

What do we get in return?   A place to shoot,  A place to meet friends,  A place to be alone and enjoy the only sport endorsed by our founding fathers.  

Let’s say the dues are $250. That breaks down to $20.84 per month or $4.80 per week or 68.4 cents per day.  A snickers candy bar at Walmart  costs 69 Cents plus whatever ungodly anti sweet tooth tax the do-gooders want to put on the candy.   For less than 1 measly ucandy bar per day you can belong to a gun range. 

Don’t get me going on the cost per month compared to what most of us pay for that Cable/Satellite TV Bill, or how much a round of Golf costs, or some other half-assed entertainment.   This is a Lifelong sport and something that can save your life.

I have absolutely no use for free loaders, None, Zero, Zip, Nadda.  So if you don’t want to join a Gun Club and want to cry on my shoulders get to stepping.  I’ve got no time for you and you will get an earful. 

Another thing I’ve noticed in 2009 is the number of Gun Clubs going to Closed Membership or limiting the number of members.  So if you don’t want to join one or stay a member then don’t,  but don’t try and tag along with me to a range when you find that the places to shoot are disappearing as they surely are. 

Think about the investment in Gun Range Membership.  It  insures our freedom has a place to be exercised.
